Self Expressions Program

This program allows individuals to try out a variety of groups within Allies, LLC which focus on teaching life skills including but not limited to: self advocacy, individual rights, personal safety, food safety, self expression, self care, hygiene, communication, community inclusion and engagement,  socialization, building and maintaining relationships, collaboration, teamwork, shopping, budgeting, nutrition, healthy living and work readiness.  

Payment Options 

  • Contact your case manager from Lane County Developmental Disabilities Services, Mentor Oregon or Full Access Brokerage to see if you are eligible for this service

  • If you don’t have case management you can either private pay (see info below) or apply to get services by contacting Lane County Developmental Disabilities Services.

  • Private Pay: $7-15 per activity/group. No transportation or attendant care (1:1 supports) provided with this option. Individuals who use this option are fairly self-sufficient during the groups, can arrange transportation to and from the group and don’t need significant or 1:1 supports during the groups. We don’t offer private pay for events outside the office or events that require drivers.

  • Scholarship Funds: These are limited to 6 uses per year per individual and offered on a first come first serve basis towards group or event expenses only. At times there may not be any funds available or a limited number for an event. This is not available for private pay clients.

What to Bring to Self Expressions Program Groups                                

  • LTD bus pass

  • Spending money (between $0-10 per activity)

  • Clothing appropriate for the weather

  • Snack and/or beverage

  • Any items discussed below in the description of the groups

Closures

Allies follows the 4J School District closure schedule regarding inclement weather. We are also closed on the following days:

  • New Year’s Day

  • Martin Luther King Jr Day

  • Memorial Day

  • Independence Day

  • Labor Day

  • Thanksgiving Weekend (Thursday-Sunday)

  • Christmas Eve

  • Christmas Day

    COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
    (Please refer to the Self Expressions Program schedule for current course offerings. SCs/PAs, please use the Referral Form to initiate services and the SC/PA POC Code Guide for more information on including these supports in an ISP.)

  • Actability

    • Through improv games and creative play, this group teaches flexible thinking, verbal and non-verbal (physical) expression, and valuable social skills in a playful environment that celebrates each person's unique talents. With the goal of establishing a core group of actors, group members will perform in a venue yet to be determined. Inspire your imagination, gain communication skills and come play with ActAbility!

  • Acts of Kindness

    • Do you enjoy helping others and making a difference? This group is for you! We will do a variety of projects, activities and volunteering to support our local community. Examples of acts of kindness we will be performing are; cleaning up parks, spending time with the elderly, caring for animals, handing out cards and making care packages for people who are houseless.

  • Allies Accomplices “Bowling Group”

    • Our group looks forward to bowling each week at Strike City Lanes. We focus on learning how to budget, take turns and collaborate with peers all while having fun!

  • Allies Monthly Events

    • Come join in on the fun! Allies hosts a variety of events each month. Some events are held at our office but most events are held out in the community. We want to provide a way to increase community participation and engagement. Socialize with your friends and learn about planning/budgeting for events.

  • Art Curators

    • Come and be an Art Curator at Allies, LLC on the 2nd-5th Fridays of the month from 12:30pm-2:30pm and the 1st Friday of the month from 5:30pm - 8:00pm. In this group we will be working on exciting group arts projects, such as bead and jewelry making, sewing books, drawing, collage, and making creative gift cards that can all be sold during our monthly First Friday open gallery nights. As curators we will also be making decisions together on how to organize and problem solve while hanging, exhibiting, and taking care of art by Allies artists. We will create attractive displays, and even make flyers to promote Allies art exhibits! We will also take monthly trips as a group into the community to visit the fine art galleries, cafés, and other businesses that we have here in both Eugene and Springfield, where we can build community relations together, and learn from others’ exhibits while gaining ideas and inspiration from them for our own. Come be a part of our creative community at Allies. Curate with us!

  • Birders

    • Join Allies in discovering the wonderful world of birds! We will go a variety of places around the community where birds like to hang out so we can look and listen as tools for identifying birds. We will work on social skills and community involvement at the same time. Come see the colors! Hear the songs and calls! Meet new people and learn about birds. Make sure to dress for the weather.

  • Bust a Move

    • Join DJ Bizzy and the rest of the Allies crew at Whirled Pies in downtown Eugene on the second Tuesday of each month. Get ready for a continuous stream of favorite dance hits peppered with special guests and comic relief. Boogie with old friends, make new friends and move your body in a fun and supportive environment. Find opportunities for healthy self expression, budgeting, stretching and physical fitness, and practicing consent culture.

  • Creative Stories

    • Explore new means of communication through creative works of famous authors and novel artists. We will take trips to different book stores in the community and attend free community events that are conducive to creative literature. Learn interpersonal skills, how to take turns, understanding different modes of communication, and participate in the community. In addition, this group will learn to work together with their peers in creating their own short stories/comics.

  • Friday Open Rec

    • Join us for an individual-directed recreational time where individuals decide on the activities for the day. Sometimes events will be planned out in advance. This could include karaoke, playing games, going to the park, taking walks and other activities to improve overall wellness. The last Friday of the month we get together for our Birthday Bash to celebrate our staff and individuals with birthdays throughout the month.

  • Gamers Group

    • This group supports exceptional individuals to learn social skills while participating in game activities of their choice. The focus will be on teaching cooperative play, reading social cues, conversation flow, initiating and maintaining conversation, and hygiene as well as providing a safe social environment to learn to handle new stressors.

  • Gardening

    • Allies has a beautiful garden space along the river path trail in a community garden. We’ve been able to make the garden an accessible space for everyone. We have walking paths, seats and tabletop gardening. Plants won’t be the only thing growing in the garden! You will learn about healthy eating, exercise, and meet new people in this beautiful and serene environment.

  • Healthy Relationships Group

    • This group is a comprehensive guide to interpersonal relationships using concrete, easy-to-grasp content and evidence-based strategies and tools for teaching learners with ASD and other cognitive or social challenges. Our goal is to foster healthy sexuality and personal safety in relationships. This class will include take home material, group discussion, evaluations, and community experiences.

  • Imagination Crafters

    • This is not your traditional crafting class. In this group we go shopping for materials as well as use recycled materials to bring the things in your imagination to life. Learn creative thinking, collaboration, teamwork, visual communication, socialization, and budgeting.

  • Kitchen Warriors

    • In this class we make small bites! This means we make a small portion meal and then split it between everyone in the group to try it out. You will learn to make new recipes each week from a variety of cultures. We go shopping on the first Thursday of the month, create a shopping list, and work with a budget. We teach food safety, sanitation, and how to use different cooking appliances and tools in a commercial kitchen environment.

  • Knitting

    • In this knitting group we learn how to cast on, knit, and purl to improve our fine motor skills and learn clean, repetitive actions that improve our focus. Beginners will work on honing in on the consistency of their basic knitting stitch. Once mastered, we can move on to projects like hats and scarves and even learn another stitch called a purl. This group is currently closed to additional beginners, but moderate and master knitters are welcome.

  • LGBTQ*

    • Allies LGBTQ* group provides an opportunity for individuals to explore topics and to ask questions related to gender and sexuality in a safe and inclusive environment. The group will also provide an opportunity for members of the community to meet and socialize with other queer individuals, explore their own identities, and gain the support of an actively informed and caring community.

  • LoveAble

    • Are you nervous about dating or looking for love? Then this group is for you! It is intended to be a safe space to learn how to date and build a relationship. The group will discuss matters of consent and safety in relationships. We will go out in the community on dates to various restaurants, bars, concerts, and other community dating location/activities. This group works well in conjunction with the Healthy Relationship group or on it’s own. Learn to plan and budget, start and maintain relationships, as well determine how and when to discontinue a relationship.

  • Men’s Group

    • This group provides a time and space for men to build trusting relationships with other men, share their experiences in a safe and supportive environment, and celebrate their masculinity. Members will find opportunities to develop self-confidence and gain tools for self-expression.

  • Music Appreciation

    • Join our music appreciation group as a way to express yourself! Make friends, learn about all types of music, collaborate in picking songs for the team to learn, attend music events in the community, try out different instruments and let your talent shine!

  • Pool Sharks

    • In this group we learn to play pool together! This will help to hone your fine and gross motor skills, balance and increase accuracy while spending time socializing. All skill levels are welcome! Games are paid by Allies but if you want a drink or food you need to bring it with you.

  • Revolution Wellness

    • This group will help support individuals with their personal health, happiness, and life by using a holistic approach. This will include reviewing personal health and wellness goals, understanding how to create empowering aspirations, working on mindfulness, learning about the relationship between physical health, mental health, exercise, and nutrition. We will purchase groceries together and practice hands-on cooking skills to prepare and cook meals and understand elements of hydration. As a team we will learn more about ourselves and the world around us in order to learn to move towards an easy, accessible, beautifully energetic life.

  • Seasonal Explorers

    • Come rain or shine. We will be doing seasonal activities in the community such as pumpkin patches and hayrides or farmer’s markets and summer concerts. When the weather is not permitting we will do indoor seasonal activities in the community such as the holiday market or stay at the Allies office.

  • Self Expression through Art

    • The group enriches our individuals lives through a focus on creativity, encouragement and providing support for our individuals sense of expression and individualism. It is a chance to learn new skills, improve peer interaction and use visual communication. All skill levels welcomed and encouraged with a focus to build upon current skills each week.

  • Self-Expressions

    • This group will focus on affirmations, self-worth, self-esteem and self-love while combining hygiene supports. Learn how to do nail care while you are enjoying a pedicure and talking with the group about ways to find self-love.

      • What to bring– Nail clipper, nail polish, brush/comb, hair ties/bobby pins, shampoo/conditioner, lotion, face wash, razor and shaving cream, deodorant, other hygiene supplies as needed.

  • Sew On

    • Learn and improve your sewing skills while expressing creative freedom, practicing sustainability, and engaging with peers - all while sticking to a budget (for the program). Make and mend clothes and enjoy using recycled materials for fun projects. Adapt your clothes to fit your body while building your confidence and self-esteem.

  • Sunday Soiree

    • Get ready to dance the night away! Join us for Soul Tribe Sundays at Sessions Music Hall lounge. Great opportunities to move, interact with colorful community members, and experience a sense of freedom on the dance floor! Space in the group depends on number of drivers available. RSVP to ensure you have a ride.

  • Tamarack Merpeople

    • This group is all about having fun while you exercise. Learn interpersonal skills, scheduling, community transportation, hygiene and many more skills. We will meet at the Allies office and then take the bus to Tamarack Pool for the open swim from 12pm-1pm. There will be time for everyone to shower after swimming before we take the bus back to Allies office.

      • What to Bring : Your swimsuit, towel, hygiene products (shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, etc..), lock for locker, $8 admission (10 swims for $35 available from Tamarack Pool with application).

  • Tuesday Open Rec

    • Join us for a recreational time where individuals decide on the activities. All the activities will be at our Allies office to provide an R & R time for the craziness later to come in the day.

  • Wednesday Music

    • Every Wednesday evening we go to Mac’s Bar and Grill to listen to music and enjoy food and drink. Come have a seat next to your friends and jam out to great music provided by friendly local musicians. You will find opportunities to socialize, practice restaurant manners, and discover new musical interests.

  • Work Ready

    • This group will focus on learning employment soft skills through group activities, worksheets, take home projects, modeling and mock interviewing. We will cover topics such as time management, communication skills, working as part of a team, conflict resolution, self advocacy, everyday math, understanding basic employee rights and employer/employee expectations.

  • Yoga

    • Come enjoy a peaceful environment and redirect your negative energy into positive energy. We go to the library twice a month to pick out different instructional videos and each member gets to pick out a video that interests them. In this group we learn self care techniques and enjoy being part of a healthy team!

      • What to Bring : You will need a towel, deodorant and water bottle. Also bring a yoga mat or extra padding if you can.
